Shocks & Struts – Noticing the Signs of Wear

Your shock absorbers (or struts on most vehicles today) have a primary function: To help you maintain control of your vehicle. And even though you think of them as the reason your vehicle rides so nicely over bumps, it’s actually working hard to keep the suspension and steering controllable by the driver. If worn or damaged, control will be compromised, and the ride will be uncomfortable.

Some telltale signs of worn or failing shocks and struts

Car Care Tips: Myths vs. Reality

Some automotive maintenance myths seem to have taken on lives of their own. Sure, they seem like logical, sound pieces of advice, but when it comes to maintaining your car, they could end up costing you extra money and time in the long run.

Here are seven common car care myths and some pitfalls to avoid when taking care of your vehicle.

Myth: Tires should be inflated to the pressure embossed on the tire’s sidewalls.

Reality: That figure is the maximum pressure—not necessarily the ideal pressure.

Preventative Car & Engine Maintenance - Santa Clarita

Regular preventive maintenance is probably the most important single thing you can do as a car owner to keep your ride happy and save money on repairs in the future. Ignoring preventative maintenance can create a love hate relationship between you and your car. Anyone who has ever owned a car or worked on a car will tell you not to ignore preventative maintenance. Even covering the basics like oil changes, tire rotations, checking your tire pressure, and following through with timed mileage services at 30,000, 60,000, and 90,000 miles will save you a lot of headaches and a lot of money.

When Your Tire Blows Out

According to the National Safety Council, the 5 most common reasons for a blown tire are under-inflation, overloading, damaged tires, uneven tread wear, and manufacturer’s defects.

While incidents of blowouts are falling due to Tire Pressure Monitoring systems, they still occur and are usually unexpected and very unnerving.

Your Car Battery

A car battery is a rechargeable cell in the SLI (starting-lighting-ignition) variety of batteries. They are also in the lead acid family of batteries.

The high power output of a car battery is necessary to supply a high current draw needed for the engine starter. A normal car battery provides about 12.6 volts and is divided into 6 separate cells; each cell produces about 2.1 volts per cell.

As the battery state of charge decreases the voltage produced also decreases.

The ABCs of car care

Back-to-school season is the ideal time to review your ABCs; the ABCs of car care, that is.

Country Automotive recommends that all drivers brush up on their auto care knowledge to make sure their vehicle is operating at its best before the school year carpool crunch and the onset of fall and harsh winter weather.

Your Warranty, Your Way

Did you know: When you buy a car from a dealership, it is not mandatory to have it serviced where purchased – Nope, it doesn’t void the warranty.

Let’s break that down a little more; just because you bought your car from a dealership, doesn’t mean they have to work on it for you if you don’t want them to. You can take your own vehicle to any repair shop you feel comfortable with, and have them do the maintenance – If later you decide to go back to the original dealership and have them do maintenance, you can do that too!
